Car Rental Deposits in Malaysia, Explained: How Much and When You Get It Back

The security deposit is one of the most common questions we get. It is a normal part of renting a car anywhere in the world, and with a few simple habits you will get all of it back. Here is how it works in Malaysia.

What is a security deposit?

A security deposit is an amount held by the rental company during your rental. It covers costs that may come up after you return the car, such as:

  • Fuel, if the car is returned with less than it had at pickup.
  • Traffic summonses (saman) and unpaid tolls issued during your rental.
  • Damage not covered by insurance, or the insurance excess.
  • Late return, extra mileage or cleaning after smoking.

If none of these apply, the full deposit is released.

How much is the deposit for a luxury car?

Deposits depend on the value of the car. At Kreto they range from:

CarDeposit
Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Toyota VellfireRM 3,000
BMW X5RM 5,000
BMW 740Li, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Porsche CayenneRM 8,000 to RM 10,000
Range Rover, Mercedes-AMG G 63RM 15,000 to RM 20,000
Porsche 911, Lamborghini, Rolls-RoyceRM 30,000 to RM 50,000

The exact amount is shown on each car page.

Pre-authorisation: the money is held, not charged

For most rentals the deposit is a pre-authorisation on your credit card. The amount is reserved, which reduces your available credit, but it is not charged. When the hold is released, the amount becomes available again.

A few things to know:

  • Use a credit card in the driver’s name with enough available limit.
  • Your bank controls the release. Once we release the hold, most banks free the amount within a few working days.
  • Some customers prefer to pay the deposit by online transfer (FPX) instead. It is then refunded to the same account.

When will I get my deposit back?

At Kreto, deposits are released within 7 working days after the car is returned. We wait a few days so that any toll charges or summonses linked to the rental can come through.

How to get your full deposit back

  1. Inspect the car at handover and point out any existing marks. Take your own photos and a short video.
  2. Return it with the same fuel level you received. Keep the fuel receipt.
  3. Return it on time. Rentals are charged per 24 hours.
  4. Keep it clean. No smoking, pets or durian in the car.
  5. Pay tolls and parking with the Touch ‘n Go card in the car, and follow the speed limits.
  6. Do a final walkaround with our team when you return the car.

What about damage?

All Kreto rentals include comprehensive insurance. If there is an accident, the insurance excess (the part not covered by insurance) may be deducted from the deposit. Always report any incident to us immediately and, where required, make a police report within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay the deposit by debit card?

For most cars we need a credit card. For lower-value cars, a deposit by online transfer may be accepted. Ask us when you book.

Is there a deposit if I book a chauffeur?

No. When you book a car with a chauffeur, no security deposit is needed.

Why is my deposit still showing after a week?

We release the hold within 7 working days, but some banks take a few extra days to show the funds as available. Send us a message and we will share the release confirmation.
