What Documents Do You Need to Rent a Car in Malaysia?

Having the right documents ready makes collecting your car quick and easy. Here is a simple checklist for renting a car in Malaysia, whether you are a local or a visitor.

bmw-7-series

Checklist for Malaysians

  • ✅ MyKad (identity card).
  • ✅ Valid Malaysian driving licence (Competent Driving Licence, CDL). A probationary (P) licence is usually not accepted for luxury cars.
  • ✅ Credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
  • ✅ Proof of address may be requested for some high-value cars, such as a recent utility bill.

Checklist for visitors

  • ✅ Passport with a valid entry stamp or visa.
  • ✅ Valid driving licence from your home country.
  • ✅ International Driving Permit, unless your licence is from an ASEAN country. Read can foreigners drive in Malaysia? for details.
  • ✅ Credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
  • ✅ Flight details if you are collecting at the airport.

Extra requirements for luxury cars

Premium cars come with stricter requirements because of their value:

RequirementTypical rule at Kreto
Minimum age25 for most cars, 30 for supercars and Rolls-Royce
Driving experienceAt least 3 years with a full licence
Security depositRM 3,000 to RM 50,000 depending on the car
Payment cardCredit card in the driver’s name (debit cards may not be accepted for the deposit)

Why a credit card? The deposit is held as a pre-authorisation and released after the rental, which works best with a credit card. Learn more in car rental deposits in Malaysia, explained.

Adding another driver

Every person who will drive the car must be named on the rental agreement and show their own licence and ID at handover. Additional drivers must meet the same age and experience rules. At Kreto an additional driver costs RM 50 per day.

Letting an unnamed person drive can void the insurance, so always add them first.

Booking for your company

For corporate rentals we also need:

  • Company registration details (SSM number).
  • An authorisation letter or purchase order.
  • Details of each driver, or the name of the guest if you book a chauffeur.

Companies with regular bookings can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing. See corporate car rental in KL.

Booking with a chauffeur

If you book a car with a chauffeur, you do not need a driving licence at all. We only need the name and phone number of the passenger and the payment details. See our chauffeur service.

Tips to make handover faster

  1. Send copies in advance. Share photos of your licence and ID on WhatsApp when you book, so we can verify them before the day.
  2. Bring the originals. We need to see the physical documents at handover.
  3. Check expiry dates. An expired licence or a passport close to expiry can cause problems.
  4. Use the same card for the booking and the deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a digital licence on my phone?

Malaysians can show the digital licence in the MyJPJ app, but please also bring your physical licence where possible. Visitors must bring their physical licence.

Can I rent with a P licence?

Probationary licence holders cannot rent luxury cars, but you can still book a car with a chauffeur.

Do you need a copy of my documents?

We record your licence and ID details for the rental agreement and insurance, and handle them in line with Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act.
